10/22/2023 0 Comments Kiteboarding for beginners![]() The course starts with the general theory concerning the dynamics of kitesurfing, the spot, winds the flight window, upwind-sidewind and downwind sailing and rights of way continuing with the set up of the equipment and its safety systems.Īfterwards, as the wind rises, you will go out on the water with the instructor, who in total safety once you have reached the spot with the best wind conditions, will inflate and show you how the kite works and how to control it, making you do the first exercises in piloting the sail to develop mastery and familiarity with the kite as well as practising the operations needed to activate the safety systems. The duration of the course consists of a minimum of 3 days, which can be non-consecutive depending on our benevolent wind god Aeolus!Īll lessons are conducted individually by a certified IKO instructor who, with the support of a boat will follow you closely and safely.Īt the end of each lesson, you will be immediately taken back to the shore without having to wait on the boat. The other 2 hours, body drag and board handling, being pretty intensive lessons, are usually carried out on successive days to help you consolidate what you’ve learnt. The first 2 lessons are usually held on the same day, so the theoretical concepts are immediately put into practice with the second lesson. Water starts becoming much colder and a full wetsuit is highly recommended. The strongest clearing winds appear between February and April. Some of them may be gusty and completely in the wrong direction. They mainly appear after storms and blow side onshore. Winter is also good for kitesurfing, but winds are less predictable than the summer thermal ones. The best hours for kiteboarding are from 2 p.m. In general, during summer months winds range between 15-25 knots. The strongest winds appear in April and May. Beginners may also try some lighter winds at Alameda Crown Beach. Ocean Beach and 3rd Avenue near San Mateo are the most popular spots. Strong, reliable winds and great waves together with some flawless flat water locations make this area an ideal location for beginners and experienced riders alike. ![]() One of the most spectacular kiteboarding opportunities can be found at San Francisco Bay Area. Morro Bay features small and medium waves, which are perfect for beginners, while Pismo Beach is advised for experienced riders only. Zuma Beach in Malibu is a long stretch of sand and perfect conditions for intermediate kiteboarder. It is suitable for both beginners and advanced riders. Leo Carillo, west of Malibu, is a sandy beach with some thermal side shore winds. It may also be very crowded, as it is the closest kitesurfing spot to the city. Topanga on the west of LA has an advanced kiteboarding launch next to trees and houses. Beginners may practise at Belmont Shore Beach, while other locations are for intermediate and advanced riders. In LA the best season for kitesurfing is spring through summer, although Southern California wind is less predictable than in the north. The region between Los Angeles and San Diego may be hidden from those winds, but you can still find several good spots for your favourite activity. North-west winds are just perfect for kites. The strongest wind occurs in the north and gets lighter as you go down the coast. ![]() The constant wind you are looking for can be found in northern and central parts of the state.
